BLUEBERRY YOGURT BUNDT CAKE

I spent a summer in college working on a lake in New Hampshire as a backcountry caretaker. My job—organized by Americorps—was a mishmash of tasks from sweeping and maintaining the network of trails that crisscrossed the nearby hills and mountains, building docks, monitoring the growth of invasive water species, and (my favorite of all) overseeing campsites.

The organization for which I worked owned 13 campsites—some tent platforms and some cabins—across three areas: teeny Bowman Island, the slightly bigger Moon Island, and a slice of the Belknap Woods (which leads into the Chamberlain Reynolds National Forest) that abuts the south shore of the lake.

MISO BANANA BREAD

When the pandemic really began to spread, I—like many of us—briefly lost my mind in the grocery department and rushed to buy an absolutely nonsensical collection of items. Now that shopping has resumed some semblance of normalcy (although I still have yet to go to a grocery store!), I’ve returned to buying groceries in my ordinary manner. I buy a mix of staples (things I use with regularity) along with fresh items like produce and meat and eggs and so on.

BLUEBERRY GALETTE

I’m sitting outside watching a cardinal flit about the garden, perching on the top of wire trellis that supports the cherry tomato vines. It’s breezy and cool out today, but the sun is shining and I’m barefoot in a t-shirt. The morning is quiet—I can hear far-off voices now and again, and an insistent cheep of birdsong high above me. I left the heavy sliding glass door open to allow fresh air through the screen, and I can hear the gentle ping and clank of the washing machine and the quiet whooshing of the white noise machine coming through the baby monitor from the nursery upstairs.

TWO-BANANA BROWN BUTTER BANANA BREAD

Wait a second, you’re thinking. She just posted a rye banana bread recipe. This girl is either floundering under the waves of early parenthood and actually losing her mind OR she is strangely fixated on banana bread.

And I’d ask you: can’t it be both? Just kidding! Not floundering! I promise. But to be honest, some days I do arrive at 5 PM and look back with wonder at the morning, thinking it must have been weeks ago that I woke up, not mere hours. There is a lot more occupying my mind—and my hands—these days, in the nicest way possible, and it is not inconceivable that I would forget about having just posted a similar recipe. Just as I might forget to switch the wet laundry to the dryer, or be unable to remember where I put the stamps, or completely lose track of my phone for the one millionth time.

COCONUT LIME SABLES

Where would you live, if money and jobs and real life logistics were no object? Would you pick a flat in London or a pied-à-terre in the Loire Valley, surrounded by vineyards and all the Sancerre you could possibly drink? Maybe you’d want to live in Austin—eating the world’s best breakfast tacos and listening to great live music on the weekends. Or you’d pick a cool apartment in a cool city like Los Angeles or Sydney or Hong Kong, or in a suburb with tidy green lawns just outside Chicago so you could vacation on weekends in picturesque Door County.
